What’s Behind That Loose Stone?

This project started when the stone on the front porch column began pulling away from the outside.

From the surface, it may have looked like just a stone issue, but when that starts happening, there is usually something else going on beneath the surface. We let the homeowner know from the beginning that there was a good chance we would find rot behind it, and we included that in the original quote. We never want to give someone a low number just to raise it later once the work starts.

Once the stone was removed, that is exactly what we found.

There was moisture damage and rotted material behind the surface that had to be addressed before everything could be put back together properly. This is why it is so important not to just patch over something you can already see is failing from the outside.

After the damaged material was taken care of, the area was properly prepped and the stone was reinstalled so everything came back together clean and looked right again.

Now the column looks much better, and the homeowner is not left with a problem getting worse behind the surface.

This was a good reminder that when something on the outside of your home starts pulling loose, cracking, or shifting, it is usually worth looking into sooner rather than later. Catching it early can help prevent a much bigger repair later on.

This one came out really nice.
